Danish pronunciation

Crack the code of Danish phonetics

Danish pronunciation is borderline impossible – words are slurred together, endings are completely swallowed, and it’s incredibly difficult to see any resemblance between the written and spoken word.

And even if you succeed in understanding the Danes when they speak, there’s still no guarantee that they’ll understand you. If you slightly mispronounce even a single vowel or don’t place the stress correctly, chances are that Danes will just stare blankly at you in bewilderment.

Our instruction in pronunciation will help you master:

  • The Danish vowels and “sinking vowels”
  • The soft “d” and the challenging Danish “r”
  • Stressed and unstressed syllables
  • Sentence melody and intonation
  • Pronunciation of word endings

Because pronunciation is so essential to your success with Danish, we recommend a dedicated focus on cracking the code. Nobody can guess their way to the pronunciation of Danish words – it takes practice! Focusing on Danish pronunciation supports all of your other learning goals and provides the necessary practice to comprehend and make yourself comprehensible in Danish.
